I would like to express my own view on ChatGPT being banned in schools.
■Educational sites are places to cultivate “the ability to think
Schools and educational institutions are required not only to teach knowledge, but also to cultivate the ability to think and make judgments. For example, subjects such as Japanese, social studies, mathematics, science, and English require not only the teaching of knowledge, but also the cultivation of the ability to think in order to solve problems.
Therefore, we believe it is appropriate to ban ChatGPT in schools. If students search for answers on ChatGPT, the value of the school’s existence will be lost and students may end up searching for answers on ChatGPT.
■It is also the role of the educational field to cultivate “the ability to achieve objectives.
However, we believe that the goal of schools is not only to provide knowledge, but also to cultivate the “ability to achieve goals. In examinations and club activities, students are expected to achieve maximum results in a limited amount of time. It is considered correct to study for long hours at school, but in reality, it is important to learn efficiently even in a short period of time.
In this sense, schools can learn more efficiently by utilizing technologies such as ChatGPT. Through this kind of trial and error, students should be able to acquire skills that will serve them well in the future. You may feel that studying for long hours at school is praiseworthy, but when you go out into the world, people who work efficiently will be praised.
■Rules need to be set according to the purpose.
I don’t think there is an absolute answer to the question of whether or not to ban ChatGPT. Each school and teacher will need to set rules according to their own objectives. For example, specific rules could be established, such as prohibiting the use of ChatGPT before exams, but allowing its use during class, and so on.
Also, the existence of ChatGPT does not mean that students will not memorize knowledge for no reason. For in order to understand and apply knowledge, it is necessary for them to work on problems on their own. In this sense, the role of the teacher remains the same: you can use ChatGPT to seek answers, but it is important to be able to explain them in your own words.
The use of technology in education will continue to grow. The question is how to utilize technology in this context. However, as technology evolves, the position in which the educational field is placed will also change. In this process, I believe it will be important to set rules according to the purpose.
